Gardena B/M Bypass Pruning Shears, Cuts Stems to 0.94 Inch

For the green cuts of the growing season: pepper and okra harvests, squash and pumpkin stems, herb bunches and flower stems. They are bypass pruners, so the blades pass each other like scissors, and Gardena lists a maximum cutting diameter of 0.94 inches.

The upper blade is precision-ground with a non-stick coating, and the lower blade is stainless steel. Keep them in the harvest basket and cut instead of tugging: Illinois Extension says less damage is done to pepper plants when the fruits are cut rather than pulled off.

Leave a handle of stem on winter squash and pumpkins. Maryland Extension leaves about two inches of stem on winter squash and 3 to 4 inches on pumpkins, and Illinois Extension notes that pumpkins without stems usually do not keep well.
