Gourmet Seed

Editorial Policy

Every planting number here comes from a university extension service or the seed company's listing, named on the page. We do not run growing trials or show star ratings.

Where our facts come from

We use sources in this order:

  1. University extension services and public agencies, for planting depth, spacing, timing, soil temperature and pests. Frost dates come from NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for named weather stations.
  2. Seed companies' growing notes, for days to maturity and the traits of a variety, as the company that sells it states them.
  3. Makers' own listings, for the specs of a product.

Where none of these covers a point, the page names the reference it used. We do not cite forums or social posts. When sources disagree, the guide gives the full range.

How guides are written and checked

Guides are written and checked with research tools, then published under the name Gourmet Seed, not a personal byline. Every fact in a guide comes from a source listed on the page, and every number is checked against a saved copy of that source. Each guide is reviewed before it goes live.

Updates and dates

Each guide shows the date it was last updated. We revise a guide to fix an error, to follow a source that has changed its advice, or to add to it.

Corrections

If you spot an error, email hello@gourmetseed.com and we will check it against the source and correct the page. Name the page and the line. If the page is wrong, we fix it and write back to tell you what changed. If the page matches its source, we tell you which one.

No sponsored content

We do not publish sponsored posts or paid reviews, and no brand pays us to be included in a guide. Some guide links earn us a commission; our disclosure explains how.

How we choose products for buying guides

Each buying guide covers one job, such as starting seeds or holding up tomato vines. It says what the job needs, then names a few picks, each with its maker and a spec the maker lists. A product from our shop is a pick only when it is the better choice for the job; otherwise the pick links to Amazon. A pick is our pick for the job the page names; we do not score, rate or rank picks. Descriptions in our shop are written from each maker's own listing, with specs as the maker states them.
