Snap beans are often called 'green' beans as they are picked while still fairly young, and eaten pod and all. Pole beans are preferred over bush beans by many because of their higher yield and generally superior flavor. Pole beans will often produce over a longer time than the bush types, but will fade in high temperatures. Bean seed should be planted about 1 inch deep in rows 3-4 feet apart. You can use single poles, pole 'teepees', trellises, or open mesh fencing to give the plants support. Best germination is achieved when soil temperatures are 70-90 F. SPECIAL CAUTION: Untreated bean seed is particularly susceptible to failure if planted in soil that is too cool or wet.
