(WS03) SQUASH SHISHIGATANI

(110 days) Also known as 'Toonas Makino', the Shishigatani pumpkin is one of the 'kyo yasai', a traditional vegetables in the Kyoto region. The fruit are uniquely shaped, like a bottle gourd and are ribbed and very warty. They are dark green, turning to tan at full maturity. (112 days) Much like the regular heirloom banana squash, but these get even bigger, up to 60 lbs. The long cylindrical fruit has thin pink skin and delicious orange flesh, is perfect for baking and pies. This heirloom is productive and it keeps very well. (WS07) MARINA DI CHIOGGIA (95 days) The heirloom 'sea pumpkin' of Chioggia, on the coast of Italy, with large turban shaped fruit that are deep blue-green. It is one of the most beautiful and unique of all squash, a perfect variety for market gardeners. The rich, sweet flesh is a deep yellow-orange and of good quality, delicious baked or in pies. (110 days) The 'violin' heirloom butternut of Italy, so named for its classic shape said to resembling that of a violin. Another fine eating suqash from the old world that is very rare and highly favored. Fine flesh is neither watery or overly dry, wrinkled and ribbed skinned fruits are about 4 lbs on the average. (100 to 110 days) Also known here in the U.S. as 'vegetable spaghetti'. Fruits average 9" long, and turn from buff to pale yellow when mature. Keeps well. Flesh is pale yellow and breaks up into spaghetti-like strands. Boil fruit for 20 to 30 minutes and remove flesh with a fork. (WS11) SQUASH SWEET LIGHTNING F1 HYBRID

(100 days) Great dual-purpose small squash, with something of a classic mini-pumpkin shape with wonderfully mottled white markings on the ribs. Good eating, and one of the best tasting squash. Its small size makes for great 'single-serving' use. Name refers to quickness of preparation: cut out the stem and empty the seed cavity, place in the microwave and in just minutes you have a great treat.
