Kohlrabi is another member of the cabbage/brassica family, and is cultivated much the same. However, instead of growing it for the greens or sprouts, it is grown for the unique and wonderfully flavored ball-shaped growth found at the base of the plant. Kohlrabi prefers mild to cool temperatures, and in warm climates can be grown in spring and/or fall. Plant in soil 55-70 F, either direct sown as soon as soil can be worked, or indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost. Plant 1/4 inch deep, 1 inch apart, in rows 12-16 inches apart, to be thinned to 4 inches once established. Mild to cool temperatures, consistent moisture, and fertile soil will produce the best results.
