Spinach Seed

Spinach prefers cool weather. Warm temperatures, erratic moisture, or dry conditions can induce bolting or poor leaf quality. Plant in cool soil, 55-65F, rich and low acidic (ph 6.5-7.5). Keep evenly moist and fertilize with nitrogen rich organics such as blood meal. Direct sow 1/2 inch deep in rows about 1 foot apart. Thin to 1 inch for baby leaf production, or 3 inches for mature leaf production. Harvest individual leaves, or cut the whole plant when ready. For a heat-tolerant alternative, try a 'Perpetual Spinach' in our Swiss Chard selections.

A cut and cut again Swiss Chard becoming very popular here in the U.S., just as it has been in Europe for many years. Grown mostly for the young leaf production, the name is derived from its similarity to fresh leaf spinch, and it is used much the same.
